The mission of the church is to make disciples. What does that mean?

Be with Jesus and do what he did.

This is how Jesus made disciples in Mark 3:14-15. He chose 12 to be with him and sent them out to preach and to heal. Jesus defined discipleship as being with him and doing what he did.

So many companies struggle with mission drift. Open AI was started as a non-profit research organization. Harvard’s original motto was Truth for Christ and the Church. In the chaos of life we drift from the mission.

Churches struggle with mission drift as well. I’ve heard people say the mission of the church is all kinds of good things:

Wait patiently for Jesus to return

Help People

Feed the Poor

Build Community

All of those are good but this is our mission: Be with Jesus and do what he did.

This is the closest thing we have to a silver bullet when it comes to church.
